OGDEN — Mike Ashment is retiring after serving the Ogden Police Department for 30 years — nearly five of those as chief.

Ashment's retirement, announced by the police department Monday, will take effect in January. He first told the agency of his plans in early November. His successor will be announced Wednesday morning.

“I’m happy to have served the great people of Ogden,” Ashment said in a news release. “And I feel fortunate to have done a lot of good over the years, for (the police department) and for the community. But I have to be honest, I’m looking forward to spending some more quality time with my family and enjoying the great outdoors.”

Ashment began his career with Ogden police as a reserve police officer. He "progressed through the ranks and served in nearly every bureau of the department," said Ogden Police Lt. Danielle Croyle.

Ashment was instrumental in establishing a multi-agency homicide investigation team in Weber and Morgan counties, Croyle said. He also previously served as commander of the Weber Morgan Narcotics Strike Force.

Ashment was commander of the Ogden Police Department's Investigation Bureau for a time and became the head of the entire department in March 2012.

Ashment's education credentials include a bachelor's degree in criminal justice from Weber State University, valedictorian honors from the Utah Police Academy and a master's degree in organizational management from the University of Phoenix.

"We wish him the best in his future endeavors and appreciate his leadership and guidance during his tenure as chief," Croyle said in a statement.
