(KSL News) -- A ruptured gas line forced evacuations this afternoon in a neighborhood on Wasatch Drive.
Firefighters say construction crews working in the area of 1400 West accidentally hit the line.
Scott Freitag, Salt Lake City Fire Dept.: "This is not an atypical occurrence. Everybody does the best they canto try and miss those lines, but sometimes they get hit."
Neighbors in the area reported the smell of gas in their homes and were ordered to evacuate.
Questar arrived on scene to shut off the gas.
Firefighters say about a dozen homes were initially evacuated, but residents have since been allowed back to their houses.
