DEL MAR, Calif. (AP) — Miss Temple City held off the late challenge of Roco Rojo to win the $300,000 Matriarch Stakes for older fillies and mares by a nose on closing day of the fall meet Sunday at Del Mar.

Ridden by Edgar Prado, Miss Temple City ran a mile on turf in 1:35.16 and paid $5.20, $3.60 and $3 as the 8-5 favorite.

Roco Rojo returned $5.20 and $3.60, while Stays in Vegas was another 1 1/4 lengths back in third and paid $5.60 to show.

It was Miss Temple City's third victory in a Grade 1 stakes for Maryland-based trainer Graham Motion. She finished fifth to male horses in the Breeders' Cup Mile at Santa Anita last month.

The victory, worth $180,000, increased Miss Temple City's career earnings to $1,453,038, with six wins in 16 starts.

Norberto Arroyo Jr. won the jockeys' title with 12 victories, edging out Drayden Van Dyke and injured Flavien Prat, who had 11. It was Arroyo's first riding championship in Southern California.

Peter Miller won his second fall training title at Del Mar with 16 victories.
