Wal-Mart has lost one fight for its new store along Parleys Way. One Salt Lake planning commissioner calls it the result of a great grassroots democracy.

Hundreds of residents last night spoke out against a proposed rezone change at 2705 E. Parleys Way, and the commission said no to Wal-Mart's request. Residents in attendance cheered.

The big box store wanted to bulldoze the Kmart building at the mouth of Parley's Canyon and put in a Wal-Mart Supercenter, tree grove and full grocery. Wal-Mart owns the property. It says if the city council also turns down its request, it will simply remodel the existing 40-year-old Kmart building.

The City Council could vote later this fall.
