KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) — A suicide bomber has killed at least 28 people inside a Shiite mosque in the Afghan capital, Kabul. Officials and eyewitnesses say another 45 people were wounded. The head of the criminal investigation department for police in Kabul says the attacker was on foot and detonated his suicide vest among the crowds inside the mosque in the western part of the city.
MOSUL, Iraq (AP) — Iraqi troops have been conducting house-to-house searches in the city of Mosul and are looking for would-be suicide car bombs. A special forces official says his troops already have foiled two attempted suicide car bombings today. The Iraqi military launched a campaign to retake Iraq's second-largest city on Oct. 17.
PARIS (AP) — Anti-terrorism police in France have arrested seven people and have thwarted what the interior minister calls a new potential attack. Sunday's arrests in the cities of Strasbourg and Marseille (mahr-SAY') come just days before the opening of the famed Christmas market in Strasbourg, which attracts tourists from across Europe. The market was the target of a failed extremist plot in 2000.
VATICAN CITY (AP) — Pope Francis is allowing all priests to absolve women who've had abortions. It's an extension of special permission the pope granted them in 2015 for the just-ended Holy Year of Mercy. Francis writes in a document made public today by the Vatican "there is no sin that God's mercy cannot reach and wipe away when it finds a repentant heart."
BERLIN (AP) — Prosecutors in Germany say a woman has been gravely injured while being dragged through the streets of a northern town while tied to a car. Her ex-partner has turned himself in to authorities. Police in Hameln say the 28-year-old woman had a cord tied around her neck, and the cord was attached to the car's trailer hitch. Prosecutors say the car drove through several streets, dragging the woman behind it. The woman was found lying on the sidewalk.
