WASHINGTON (AP) — President-elect Donald Trump is nominating a hard-line Republican congressman from Kansas, Mike Pompeo (pahm-PAY'-oh), to be CIA director. Pompeo has heavily criticized the Iran deal, blasted Hillary Clinton over the Benghazi attack and believes Edward Snowden is a traitor. His confirmation hearing could focus in part on his views on using harsh interrogation techniques on detainees. Trump has backed these techniques, saying: "We should go tougher than waterboarding."
WASHINGTON (AP) — Donald Trump's Justice Department may differ sharply from the Obama administration in its philosophical direction. That's the indication from Trump's selection of Alabama Sen. Jeff Sessions as attorney general. The pick was disclosed today by a senior Trump official -- but there's no word on whether Sessions has accepted the job. Sessions would bring a consistently conservative voice to the department.
DETROIT (AP) — Donald Trump is claiming to have persuaded the chairman of Ford Motor Company not to move an assembly plant from Kentucky to Mexico. But Ford never intended to move the plant -- just the production of one of the vehicles made there. Instead, Ford decided to keep production of a small SUV, the Lincoln MKC, at the Louisville plant. A Ford spokeswoman says she doesn't know when that decision was made, or if Trump had any impact on it.
MOSCOW (AP) — Russian President Vladimir Putin says his military is working to develop new weapons to ensure a global strategic balance. Speaking to top military leaders at his residence in the Black Sea resort of Sochi, Putin said that Russia, like other nations, is working on state-of-the art arms technologies, including laser, hypersonic and robotic weapons.
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — A Minnesota mother is suing her teenage child for transitioning from male to female without her permission. Anmarie Calgaro is also suing the 17-year-old's doctors and public health and school officials in the lawsuit filed in Minneapolis federal court. She says in the lawsuit that her child has been treated at a Minneapolis health clinic and given medication for transgender issues without her consent. She also says the school district has taken away her parental rights and refused to release records to her.
