JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) — Davon Reed scored 17 points, Ja'Quan Newton had 16 points and a career-high seven assists, and Miami cruised past North Florida 94-56 on Wednesday night.
Miami started the game on a 7-0 run, went on a 14-0 spurt for a 35-16 lead and held its advantage throughout. North Florida went scoreless during a 7-minute stretch in the first half and only scored four points in the final 11 minutes of the period to trail 48-20 at the break.
The Hurricanes opened the second half on an 11-0 run and Newton's sixth assist led to a Bruce Brown basket that gave Miami a 67-27 lead with 12:06 left in the second half.
Freshmen Dewan Huell and DJ Vasiljevic scored in double figures for Miami (2-0). Huell had 15 points and eight rebounds, and Vasiljevic added 13 points. Anthony Lawrence Jr. chipped in 10 points.
Dallas Moore led North Florida (1-2) with 12 points. Freshman Wajid Aminu had a career-high 11 points and six rebounds, and Garrett Sams added 10 points. The Ospreys were held to 34.4 percent shooting and were outrebounded 46-31.
"We had some chances when the score was 21-16 to get even closer and we just didn't convert," North Florida coach Matthew Driscoll said. "I told the guys in games like this you have to make those plays because that's what good teams do. Give Miami credit for doing what they had to do, not only in defending Dallas, but also against our whole team."
HIGH SCORING
In back-to-back games, the Hurricanes have scored 90-plus-points — including 92 against Western Carolina in its opener. The last time that occurred for Miami was against Mississippi State (105) and Utah (90) in November of 2015.
BENCH PLAYERS
North Florida: Moore and Romelo Banks, who scored nine points, were the only starters for UNF to score in the game. ... UNF's bench outscored the starters 35-21.
