OGDEN — Three northern Utah residents accused of targeting ATMs now face criminal charges.

Ashlee Hayes, 34, of Ogden; Kacy Peterson, 48, of Brigham City; and Rainer Such, 31, of Riverdale; were charged Monday in 2nd District Court with conspiracy to commit aggravated robbery, a second-degree felony; two counts of attempted theft, a third-degree felony; and burglary, a third-degree felony.

The group is accused of trying to steal an ATM at the Plain City America First Credit Union on Oct. 31, according to charging documents. The Utah Attorney General's Office received a tip of what was going to happen and used GPS devices to monitor the two vehicles that went to the bank that night, the charges state.

Two went inside the bank while others stood outside as lookout. But once inside the bank lobby, "loud clanking noises can be heard while the two are trying to move the ATM. The ATM did not move and the two left the lobby empty handed," according to charging documents.

A few days later, the group planned to use a Taser on an ATM technician who would be fixing a machine, and then use his key fob to get inside an ATM and steal the "ATM cassettes," the charges state. One defendant, Such, appeared to have knowledge of how ATMs work, according to charging documents.

"The individuals involved in the conspiracy to commit robbery outlined above all have criminal histories. K. Peterson has extensive criminal history that includes aggravated robbery, avoiding apprehension and assault. A. Hales has a criminal history that includes reckless endangerment. R. Such has a criminal history including theft and electronic communication harassment," the charges state.
