OREM, Utah (AP) — Operators of Orem's wastewater treatment plant say someone has been clogging the sewer system with a mysterious sludge.
Officials told Salt Lake City's KSL-TV (http://bit.ly/2eK0g59 ) on Saturday that they are asking for the public's help in determining who is behind the dumping.
Water reclamation manager Lawrence Burton says crews have had to halt operations almost weekly for the past few months.
According to Burton, cleanup costs nearly 100 hours of manpower and thousands of dollars.
There are 6,000 possible dumpsites so finding the source would be difficult.
Burton says the culprit is likely disposing of the sludge through a manhole in some obscure location.
Tests show the sludge itself is not harmful.
The plant treats 8 million gallons of wastewater daily and pumps it back into Utah Lake.
