TOOELE — Police believe alcohol contributed to a fatal crash on I-80 Friday morning.
Two men were traveling west on the freeway about 5:15 a.m. when their car suddenly veered into a rest stop at Exit 100, hitting a concrete barrier, according to the Utah Highway Patrol. From there, the car slid sideways into the rest stop and crashed into a parked semitrailer, hitting on the driver's side of the car.
Police initially said the men may have been arguing and not paying attention when the crash occurred. Alcohol impairment is also suspected.
The driver, Skyler Sanger, 26, of West Valley City, was killed in the impact. The passenger, Ronald Bennett, 22, of Salt Lake City, was critically injured and transported to Mountain West Medical Center, UHP reported.
"The speed limit through this area is 75 mph. That is fast," UHP Lt. Shawn Judd said. "That semi is obviously a very large and heavy object, so when you hit that, there's going to be a lot of damage."
The driver in the parked semitrailer, who was asleep in the truck's sleeper berth at the time, was not hurt.
