IRBIL, Iraq (AP) — The U.N.'s humanitarian coordinator for Iraq says the operation to retake Mosul from the Islamic State group has the potential to become the single largest, most complex humanitarian operation in the world in 2016. Some 700,000 civilians may re quire shelter from facilities capable of handling less than 10 percent of that number. Iraqi Kurdish forces have moved toward Mosul, with the backing of airstrikes from the U.S.-led coalition.
WASHINGTON (AP) — Donald Trump's wife says that her husband was "egged on" by then-'Access Hollywood' host Billy Bush in lewd 2005 footage in which he brags about groping women. Melania Trump tells CNN's Anderson Cooper that the pair were engaged in "boy talk, and he was led on, like, egged on, from the host to say dirty and bad stuff." She says the remarks were "inappropriate" and "not acceptable" and not from the man she knows and loves.
HILLSBOROUGH, N.C. (AP) — The White House is responding to reports of a fire being set at a local Republican Party headquarters in Hillsborough, North Carolina, saying there is no justification for the use of violence to advance a political agenda. A GoFundMe online drive by Democrats to raise $10,000 to reopen the North Carolina county Republican office that was damaged by a fire-bombing attack needed only 40 minutes to meet its goal.
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) — Florida's hourly minimum wage is going up, but it will barely be noticeable for wage earners. State officials have announced that the wage will rise Jan. 1 in Florida from $8.05 to $8.10 an hour. Florida law requires the state to annually calculate the rate based on increases in the federal Consumer Price Index. Workers group call the hike "trivial."
TORONTO (AP) — An Ontario judge has blocked a last-minute attempt to bar the Cleveland Indians from using their team name and "Chief Wahoo" logo during tonight playoff game in Toronto. The legal challenge was filed by indigenous activist Douglas Cardinal hours before the team played the Blue Jays in Game 3 of the AL Championship Series. The long-standing logo, which appears on some team caps and jerseys, depicts a grinning, red-faced cartoon with a feather headband.
