LUXEMBOURG (AP) — Fourth-seeded Caroline Garcia was taken to three sets before beating Anett Kontaveit of Estonia 7-6 (2), 2-6, 6-4 on Monday in the first round of the Luxembourg Open.

The Frenchwoman needed almost 2 ½ hours to beat Kontaveit, who is ranked 96 places below Garcia — 121 vs. 25.

Francesca Schiavone of Italy comfortably defeated fifth-seeded Laura Siegemund of Germany 6-2, 6-2.

Monica Niculescu, Anna Karolina Schmiedlova, Varvara Lepchenko and Denisa Allertova also advanced.
