ARCADIA, Calif. (AP) — California Diamond won the $70,000 Speakeasy Stakes for 2-year-olds by 2 1/4 lengths Sunday at Santa Anita.

Ridden by Kent Desormeaux, California Diamond ran six furlongs in 1:10.96 and paid $3.40, $2.80 and $2.10 as the 3-5 favorite.

Right Hand Man returned $7.60 and $3, while Silver Assault was another 2 1/2 lengths back in third and paid $2.60 to show as the 9-5 second choice.

Trained by Peter Miller, California Diamond was purchased privately following a victory in the Santa Anita Juvenile on July 9.

"He's really talented," said Desormeaux, who has ridden California Diamond in his last two starts. "The sky's the limit with him. I was impressed with his performance."

The victory, worth $55,680, increased California Diamond's career earnings to $267,780, with four wins in six starts.
