LAYTON — Several officers responded to the scene of what was considered a possible abduction of an 8-year-old girl Tuesday, but police say she wasn't kidnapped.
The girl's older brother, in his late teens or early 20s, had put her in the care of a family friend she didn't know, said Unified Police Lt. Brian Lohrke. The girl called her mother and told her she didn't know the man driving her around and that he refused to stop the vehicle, Lohrke said.
The woman contacted police shortly before 9 p.m. Investigators were able to track the location of the girl's cellphone and caught up to the vehicle on northbound I-15 near the Antelope Drive exit.
Multiple witnesses reported a large number of police vehicles in the area. According to a post on Twitter from the Utah Department of Transportation, three lanes of northbound I-15 were closed near the Antelope Drive exit because of a "police incident."
Police pulled over the car and learned that the girl had not been kidnapped, Lohrke said. The girl's 2-year-old sibling was also in the car at the time. The driver was cooperative with police, according to the lieutenant.
Lohrke said the incident may have been caused by "bad decisions by the older brother who (was) supposed to be watching the kids." However, the brother will not be cited, he said.
