ALAMEDA, Calif. (AP) — The Oakland Raiders have signed linebacker Perry Riley Jr. and placed linebacker Ben Heeney on injured reserve with an ankle injury.

The team also signed linebacker James Cowser to the practice squad on Tuesday and released defensive lineman Demetrius Cherry and linebacker Darnell Sankey from the practice squad.

Riley joins the Raiders after six seasons with Washington, where he played in 79 games and totaled 9 1/2 sacks, two forced fumbles, four fumble recoveries, three interceptions and 26 passes defensed. In 2013, Riley led the team with 112 tackles and posted a career-high eight passes defensed to go along with three sacks.
