MESQUITE, Nev. — A St. George man is in custody and a family heading to a wedding in Toquerville recovering following a bizarre hit-and-run DUI crash early Saturday.
About 4:40 a.m., four people from California were traveling north on I-15 along the Arizona strip, south of St. George, when another vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed came up from behind and hit them.
"The victim vehicle became airborne at some point and rolled several times," said Arizona Department of Public Safety spokesman Bart Graves.
But rather than check on the people he just hit, Graves said the driver that caused the crash left a note on his own vehicle saying that he'd be back, and then walked away.
The four people in the vehicle that rolled were all wearing seat belts. All were transported to Dixie Regional Medical Center with injuries not considered to be life-threatening, Graves said, and were admitted overnight, he said.
As the Arizona Highway Patrol was investigating the crash, a man with obvious injuries came walking up.
"Gentleman returned to the scene and said he was a friend of the driver of the at-fault vehicle and he was checking on the status of the car so he could get it back. Turned out that was not a friend, that was the actual driver of the vehicle," Graves said.
That St. George man, whose name was not yet released, was booked into the Mesquite Jail for investigation of aggravated DUI and aggravated assault.
