MIAMI (AP) — Major League Baseball says it's "stunned and devastated" by news of the death of Miami Marlins pitcher Jose Fernandez. The 24-year-old ace was killed in a boat crash early today off Miami Beach. Two other people also died. Baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred calls Fernandez one of baseball's "great young stars" who made a dramatic impact on and off the field since his debut in 2013.
BURLINGTON, Wash. (AP) — Authorities say the 20-year-old suspect in Friday's Washington state mall shootings said nothing and appeared "zombie-like" when he was arrested last night. Island County Sheriff's Lt. Mike Hawley said he was in a patrol car in Oak Harbor, Washington, when he spotted Arcan Cetin (CHAY'-tihn) and recognized him as the man wanted in the fatal shootings of five people in nearby Burlington. Authorities say the suspect is a legal permanent U.S. resident who immigrated from Turkey.
CLEVELAND (AP) — Authorities in the Cleveland area are issuing warnings after seven people died of overdoses yesterday. The outbreak across Cuyahoga (ky-uh-HOH'-guh) County comes after 52 people died from heroin or fentanyl (FEHN'-tuh-nihl) in August. The county medical examiner says his office is conducting tests to figure out which drugs were involved in the latest cases. A recent spate of overdoses in Akron and Cincinnati involved a powerful animal sedative.
WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. (AP) — Donald Trump has met with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu this morning at Trump Tower in New York. Hillary Clinton is also expected to meet with Netanyahu today. The Israeli leader has sought to project neutrality in this election after perceptions arose that he favored Mitt Romney over President Barack Obama in 2012. Obama met with Netanyahu last week while both were in New York for the U.N. General Assembly.
NEW YORK (AP) — CBS is capping off its farewell tribute to Charles Osgood as "Sunday Morning" host by naming Jane Pauley as his successor. Osgood is retiring today after hosting the show for 22 years. Pauley has been a contributor to the program since 2014. She anchored NBC's "Today" show for 13 years, ending in 1989.
