CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — The White House says President Barack Obama has called the mayors of Charlotte, North Carolina and Tulsa, Oklahoma, to get an update on protests after fatal shootings involving police officers and a black victim. The White House says he and the mayors reiterated that protests should be conducted in a peaceful manner. There are demonstrations underway in both cities.
NEW YORK (AP) — Two federal law enforcement officials say the wife of a man charged with setting off bombs in New York and New Jersey will return soon to the United States. One of the officials says that Ahmad Khan Rahami's wife made a statement to authorities after walking into the U.S. Embassy in the United Arab Emirates. Meanwhile, a public defender has sought a court appearance for Rahami so he can hear the federal terrorism charges against him. He also faces state charges.
BEIRUT (AP) — A senior U.S. official says that Washington has determined with a very high degree of confidence that an attack on a humanitarian aid convoy in Syria on Monday was carried out by a Russian piloted aircraft. The assessment laid more deliberate blame on Moscow for the strike on the Syrian Arab Red Crescent convoy, which killed 20 civilians.
NORFOLK, Va. (AP) — A stalled weather system and the remnants of Tropical Storm Julia have brought days of rain and localized flooding in coastal Virginia and North Carolina. High water blocked roads and forced school closings today that affected for more than 100,000 students. The Navy authorized a 2-hour delay for its non-essential personnel at military installations throughout the Hampton Roads region. The rain is expected to continue into tomorrow.
BRENHAM, Texas (AP) — Blue Bell Creameries is recalling select flavors of ice cream distributed across the South after finding chocolate chip cookie dough from a third-party supplier for use as an ingredient was potentially contaminated with listeria. The flavors affected are Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough and Cookie Two Step. Blue Bell says no illnesses have been reported. The ice cream was distributed in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North and South Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia.
