This is Fred Ball for Zions Bank, speaking on business.
Eight years ago, Kara Dohrenwend began restoring and revegetating Moab's desert landscapes using her blue Volvo station wagon, a five-gallon bucket and a shovel.
Today, Kara's company, Wildland Scapes, works to restore and beautify desert landscapes across Southeastern Utah and the Colorado Plateau. Wildland Scapes' 10 employees bring extensive knowledge about regionally native plants, along with a broad range of experience in horticulture, ecology and botany.
On Wildland Scapes' Web site, reveg.org, I saw some amazing before-and-after images that showed brown, barren fields and how Kara and her team helped them come alive with native brush and other plant life.
Kara received formal training in landscape architecture and has more than 15 years of experience in revegetation, weed control and erosion management.
Wildland Scapes has created beautiful, drought-tolerant landscapes for both commercial and residential properties, including the Grand County Library and the Moab Zions Bank Office. The company also operates a wholesale nursery where it sells regionally native plants.
Kara tells me that Wildland Scapes always works with native plants like yuccas and penstemons. She says landscapes with this type of vegetation are easier to maintain than traditional landscaping because they use less water, resulting in fewer weeds.
Wildland Scapes has been involved in many large-scale revegetation projects, including revitalizing a 14-acre stretch of land along the Colorado River by replacing water-guzzling tamarisks with native vegetation.
Moab is known for its striking vistas and scenic grandeur. And Wildland Scapes in Moab is enhancing the already-rich landscape in an environmentally responsible way.
For Zions Bank, I'm Fred Ball. I'm speaking on business.
