SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Donald Trump's running mate Mike Pence says the Republican presidential candidate shares values with Utah voters who've been slow to embrace the brash billionaire.
Pence says Trump values security, prosperity, conservative Supreme Court justices, low taxes and other positions that Utah's heavily Republican voters hold.
Pence made the comments in a radio interview with Boyd Matheson, president of Utah's conservative Sutherland Institute, that's set to air Wednesday evening on 105.9 KNRS.
The Sutherland Institute released a statement earlier Wednesday previewing Pence's remarks.
Many in Utah's GOP, ranging from moderates to conservatives, have been hand-wringing for months about supporting Trump. His in-your-face demeanor and positions such as a proposed Muslim ban have repelled many Utah Republicans and Mormons, who are used to more cordial politicians.
Trump has acknowledged the issue and has said he is "having a tremendous problem in Utah."
