MEXICO CITY (AP) — Donald Trump has arrived in Mexico for a hastily-arranged meeting with the country's president -- who's already facing harsh criticism at home for agreeing to meet with Trump. President Enrique Pena Nieto has, in the past, compared Trump to Adolf Hitler. And Mexicans widely despise Trump for saying that Mexico was sending criminals and rapists across the border, and for vowing to build a border wall that Mexico would pay for. Trump later today will deliver an immigration speech that could clarify some of his positions.
CINCINNATI (AP) — Hillary Clinton is making a vigorous appeal to Republican voters today, arguing that she's best able to uphold American values, care for the military and protect national security. Speaking to the American Legion annual convention in Cincinnati, Clinton called the United States an "exceptional nation," saying it has a unique ability to be "a champion for freedom and opportunity." She said Donald Trump doesn't hold that view, and that he considers it "insulting to the rest of the world."
DURHAM, N.C. (AP) — A North Carolina judge has thrown out the double-murder conviction of a man who had spent 21 years in prison. And a short time later, Darryl Howard left the Durham County jail. The judge says DNA evidence that was unavailable at the time of Howard's 1995 murder trial would have created a reasonable doubt for jurors who convicted him. Howard was prosecuted by then-district-attorney Mike Nifong (NY'-fawng), who was later disbarred and jailed for his handling of the Duke University lacrosse case.
DETROIT (AP) — Tesla Motors is planning improvements to its semi-autonomous Autopilot system. The changes come after a fatal crash earlier this summer. The company's CEO, Elon Musk, wrote in a Tweet today that a software update will be released in a few weeks. He says it will make "major improvements" to Autopilot, including more advanced processing of radar signals. Tesla's Autopilot system can maintain a set speed, keep the car within its lane and brake automatically. In May, a driver whose Tesla Model S was operating in Autopilot died after he crashed into a tractor-trailer.
SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) — Colin Kaepernick's (KAP'-ur-nihks) protest of the national anthem is apparently winning support from some military veterans on Twitter. The San Francisco 49ers quarterback sparked controversy during the NFL's preseason by sitting during the "Star-Spangled Banner." He says he's protesting what he describes as oppression of minorities in the United States. Some critics said it was insulting to veterans. But some people who identify themselves as veterans have tweeted pictures of themselves in uniform and messages of support. One says he served to protect freedoms, not a song. Another says protesting is every American's right.
