RODANTHE, N.C. (AP) — Residents along Florida's panhandle are keeping an eye on forecasts for the next day of so because of a big tropical depression in the gulf of Mexico. It could strengthen. A hurricane watch for areas of Florida's Gulf coast stretches from northwest of Tampa to Indian Pass on the Panhandle. In the Atlantic, a weather system is passing near the Outer Banks. Forecasters say it could generate up to 5 inches of rain in some areas. In the Pacific, a hurricane warning is in effect for Hawaii's Big Island.
BANNING, Calif. (AP) — Fire officials say a wildfire tearing through brush east of Los Angeles has destroyed an outbuilding and forced 700 people from their homes. The Riverside County Fire Department says the fast-moving fire has prompted the evacuation of at least 200 homes as it races through drought-dry hills near Banning. Winds gusting up to about 20 mph are fanning the blaze.
TEMECULA, Calif. (AP) — The remains of five adults have been found after a fire that gutted a board-and-care home southeast of Los Angeles. The remains were found today after fire crews doused a blaze at the home in unincorporated Temecula (teh-MEHK'-yoo-lah). The cause of the fire is unclear.
WASHINGTON (AP) — South Carolina Congressman Jim Clyburn, a Hillary Clinton supporter, says top Republican leaders need to disavow what Clyburn calls "hateful rhetoric from Donald Trump." Clyburn also denounced a tweet by a black minister who supports Trump. The tweet, from Pastor Mark Burns, showed Clinton in blackface. Burns, also from South Carolina, apologized today for the tweeted cartoon.
JACKSON, Miss. (AP) — Two more Mississippi universities have stopped flying the state's flag featuring the Confederate battle emblem, decisions that drew rebukes from the governor. Mississippi State University and the Mississippi University for Women removed the flag from outdoor flagpoles over the summer. The universities' actions came after state lawmakers failed to act on changing the flag this year.
