NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) — Officials say a man who was involved in a shootout with police officers in South Carolina shot himself to death.
Charleston County Coroner Rae Wooten tells news outlets in a statement that 29-year-old Christian Olivencia died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound after exchanging fire with North Charleston police Friday night.
Officers responding to a call about a man shooting a gun at an apartment building say the man left in a car, eluded an attempt at a traffic stop and drove back to the complex.
Police said the man then led officers on a foot chase before he stopped, firing at gun at them. The officers fired back.
Olivencia was pronounced dead at the scene.
North Charleston police spokesman Spencer Pryor says the two officers involved in the shootout are on administrative leave.
