AMATRICE, Italy (AP) — Rescuers have pulled dozens of people young and old from the rubble of Italy's powerful earthquake, while trying to keep some victims calm as they waited to be pulled to safety. There are reports of as many as 50 dead, and the toll is expected to rise. Three towns were reduced to rubble by the quake. The center of the town of Amatrice (ah-mah-TREE'-cheh) was devastated, with entire buildings razed and the air thick with dust and smelling strongly of gas.
BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — The National Weather Service says the entire Amite (ah-MEET') River in Louisiana is now below flood stage and water levels should continue to fall. A forecaster says the Baton Rouge area could get one to three inches of rain this afternoon, and that the rain will have nowhere to go because the ground is saturated. He says forecasters will be watching for possible flash flooding.
CHICAGO (AP) — Police in Chicago are questioning a possible suspect in an apartment building fire that killed three children and a man. A police spokesman says investigators have been questioning the person since yesterday. No charges have been announced. They say a preliminary investigation indicates someone deliberately set fire to the building early yesterday after a dispute. Around 200 firefighters worked for hours to put out the blaze at a three-story building in the South Chicago neighborhood.
NEW YORK (AP) — U.S. swimmer James Feigen (FEE'-gen) is apologizing for what he calls a "serious distraction" he and three teammates caused at a gas station during the Rio Olympics. He says he left out some information in his statement to police -- including the fact that the swimmers urinated behind the building, and that fellow swimmer Ryan Lochte pulled a poster off a wall. He still maintains the group didn't force their way into a bathroom, and that a gun was pointed at them by a security guard. Feigen was pulled off an airplane last week by police for more questioning. He says he paid a fine of $10,800 for return of his passport.
NEW YORK (AP) — Stocks have opened slightly lower on Wall Street as the market gives back a modest gain from the day before. Mining and energy stocks were among the decliners in early trading as prices for metals and crude oil fall.
