SALT LAKE CITY — Police are seeking two men believed to be responsible for a gang-related shooting that left a 16-year-old boy in serious condition.
The shooting occurred at 1175 S. Glendale Drive around 6:40 p.m. The boy was walking down the street when the two men approached and fired several shots at him, hitting him once, said Salt Lake police detective Cody Lougy.
The boy walked a little bit farther and collapsed, Lougy said. He was taken to a hospital in serious condition, though police declined to say where on his body he was hit.
Three bullets hit the exterior of the Dual Immersion Academy charter school, which opened for the school year Monday, Lougy said.
"This is a residential area, so there's a lot of people walking (around) and things like that, and fortunately the school at the time was closed," he said.
Detectives remained on scene Tuesday night interviewing several witnesses to the shooting. Lougy said it's possible the incident was also caught by surveillance cameras.
Police described the two men as Hispanic and in their late teens to early 20s. One of the men has a heavy build and was wearing red shorts; the other was described as skinny and wearing baggy blue jeans. Both were wearing gray shirts.
Police said a gray Dodge Charger, black GMC SUV or cream-colored Acura sedan may have been at the scene of the shooting.
Police are "very familiar" with the victim, who is a known gang member and has been "involved with" other shootings, Lougy said. Police believe the motive for the shooting is gang-related, he added.
Anyone with information about the men or the vehicles described is asked to call 801-799-3000.
