His remarks could indicate he is considering easing his earlier pledge to deport the 11 million people living in the country illegally. Trump said he would make a decision "very soon" about deportations.
BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — President Barack Obama has thanked federal workers who are responding to the devastating flooding in southern Louisiana. More than 110,000 people have applied for federal aid. Obama visited a suburb of Baton Rouge today and said the government will be involved in helping residents long after the TV cameras have gone.
ROANOKE, Va. (AP) — Authorities say the suspect in a Virginia stabbing that's being investigated by the FBI told authorities he was hearing voices telling him to attack someone. Police in Roanoke say Wasil Farooqui severely injured a man and woman when he attacked them with a knife as the two entered an apartment building Saturday evening. Police say witnesses said Farooqui yelled "Allahu akbar." The phrase is Arabic for "God is great."
ATLANTA (AP) — A proposal to build a mosque and Muslim cemetery has so angered some residents of Newton County outside Atlanta that their commissioners have temporarily banned all building permit approvals for religious institutions. That's prompted the Council on American-Islamic Relations and the NAACP to request a federal civil rights investigation in Newton County.
WASHINGTON (AP) — A homeless woman who has lived on the streets of the nation's capital for years has convinced the government that it owes her more than $100,000 in Social Security payments. The Washington Post reports Wanda Witter refused to cash monthly benefit checks because they varied wildly and she believed they were wrong. Fortunately, she kept three suitcases of paperwork to validate her claim. She's received a payout of $99,999 and has moved into an apartment.
