LOGAN — The first day of school at Ellis Elementary School on Tuesday had a little more excitement than students and administrators were expecting.

"It was just really bad timing," said Logan Police Chief Gary Jensen.

As students were walking to school, 348 W. 300 North, police were pursuing a possible shooting suspect nearby, causing the school to go into a lockdown mode as a precaution. Neither the school nor any of the students were ever threatened.

The incident began about 6:45 a.m. when police received a report of a dispute with shots fired near 255 W. 300 North, Jensen said. The alleged victim was initially reluctant to talk, he said, but detectives found a shell casing that corroborated his story and got enough suspect information that they believed they knew who they were looking for.

As tactical teams were setting up to enter an apartment complex near the initial call of shots fired, a Logan police officer spotted the alleged gunman near 124 N. 200 West, Jensen said. The man ran into a nearby house. But before SWAT teams could surround the house, the man ran out the back door.

He was again spotted by a Logan police detective running through fields and backyards about a block-and-a-half away from the school.

"He was ordered to the ground at gunpoint and he surrendered," Jensen said.

The man's name was not immediately released Tuesday pending his official booking into jail.
