(AP) — The White House says President Barack Obama will visit Louisiana on Tuesday to survey the damage from flooding that forced thousands from their homes and left at least 13 people dead. Donald Trump visited Baton Rouge Friday to show support for residents trying to recover from the floods. Hillary Clinton suggested that there shouldn't be any visits just yet -- saying the relief effort doesn't need "distractions."
PHELAN, Calif. (AP) — Officials say the big wildfire burning in mountainous terrain east of Los Angeles is now 40 percent contained following major progress Friday. The blaze has destroyed at least 96 homes and 213 outbuildings but evacuees are increasingly being allowed to return to their neighborhoods.
MIAMI (AP) — Health officials say Miami's South Beach has been identified as a second site of Zika transmission by mosquitoes in the U.S. Five cases of Zika have been connected to mosquitoes in Miami's Wynwood arts district, bringing Florida's caseload to 36 infections not related to travel outside the U.S. Battling the insects will be more of a challenge in the new zone because high-rise buildings make it impossible to do aerial spraying.
PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti (AP) — After years of denial, the United Nations is acknowledging that it played a role in inadvertently introducing cholera to Haiti and will now offer aid to victims. Experts say it was spread to the impoverished island from sewage from a base for U.N. troops from Nepal following the 2004 earthquake. Cholera has killed more than 9,300 Haitians and sickened over 800,000.
RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) — U.S. Olympic swimmer Ryan Lochte (LAHK'-tee) is apologizing for his behavior surrounding an incident at a Rio de Janeiro gas station. He later claimed he had been robbed with three other swimmers. Usain Bolt ended his Olympic career with another gold, leading his Jamaican team in the 4x100 relay. The U.S. team finished third but were disqualified for an improper baton handoff.
