MINERAL SPRINGS, Ark. (AP) — A southwest Arkansas school district has filed suit against the state, hoping to keep its high school off the state's list of academically distressed schools.

The Mineral Springs School District filed the lawsuit Thursday against the Arkansas Department of Education and the State Board of Education. Last week, the state board denied the district's request to remove the academic-distress label for its high school.

Schools are classified as academically distressed when fewer than half of their students score at proficient levels on state exams in math and literacy over the past three academic years. According to the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette (http://bit.ly/2bCOmYj ), Mineral Springs administrators argue that the state did not give the school timely notice of the classification.

The lawsuit was filed in Pulaski County.
