NEW YORK (AP) — Brandon Morrow has been called up by the San Diego Padres after more than a year out of the majors.
The right-hander was selected from Triple-A El Paso and added to the big league bullpen Saturday night against the New York Mets. Sidelined by a shoulder injury last season, Morrow hadn't pitched in the majors since May 2, 2015.
To make roster room, San Diego optioned left-hander Buddy Baumann to El Paso and transferred infielder Cory Spangenberg to the 60-day disabled list. Spangenberg is expected to miss the rest of the season with a left quadriceps injury.
The 32-year-old Morrow, drafted fifth overall by Seattle in 2006, transitioned from starter to reliever at El Paso this year. He is 44-43 with a 4.22 ERA and 16 saves in nine major league seasons with the Mariners, Blue Jays and Padres. He has made 236 appearances, including 113 starts.
