NEW ORLEANS (AP) — A state of emergency continues in effect in Louisiana where the southeastern part of the state is again bracing for heavy rain and possible flooding today. At least two people died and dozens had to be rescued from waist-high water surrounding their homes yesterday. Gov. John Bel Edwards plans to discuss the flood situation with reporters today.
ERIE, Pa. (AP) — Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton dialed up the pressure on Republican Donald Trump by releasing her 2015 tax returns, something Trump has refused to do claiming an ongoing IRS audit prevents it. The filing shows that the Clintons earned $10.6 million and paid a federal tax rate of 34.2 percent last year. Trump told Pennsylvanians the only way he'll lose that state is if there's cheating.
MARINE CORPS BASE QUANTICO, Va. (AP) — The U.S. Marine Corps is looking for a ten percent solution. Marine Commandant Gen. Robert Neller says he wants to increase the number of women in the Corps to 1 in 10. Marine recruiters are turning to girls high school sports teams to find candidates who may be able to meet the Corps' rigorous physical standards.
ISLAMABAD (AP) — Pakistan's foreign ministry says thanks to tribal elders on both sides of the border, the crew of a Pakistani helicopter that went missing in Afghanistan earlier this month has returned home. The ministry did not say who was holding the crew, but an Afghan governor has said the six Pakistanis and a Russian navigator were detained by the Taliban in an area outside the government's control.
BERLIN (AP) — Chancellor Angela Merkel is calling together top German companies for meetings on how the country can best integrate last year's flood of asylum-seekers into the workplace. The Bild newspaper reports today that Merkel has invited representatives from companies like Volkswagen and Siemens to a meeting in mid-September. Germany registered some 1 million migrants in 2015 alone.
