THIS IS LARRY MANKIN, PRESIDENT OF THE SALT LAKE CHAMBER, WITH YOUR METRO BUSINESS REPORT

According to Creighton University’s Business Conditions Survey, in July the Business Confidence index took its largest one-month decline in more than six years. Post-Olympic pullbacks for Utah firms in transportation, non-durable goods manufacturing, and construction are now spilling over into the large services sector. However, firms in the Mountain States are slowing their rate of layoffs.

The consolidation of the Utah Symphony and Opera continues. The combined staff has 60 full and part-time employees. Utah Opera staff will move from the Capitol Theater to join their symphony colleagues at Abravanel Hall. The Utah Symphony and Opera’s first performance as a new entity will be August 22nd at Opera in the Park 2002 in Valley Regional Park.

Here’s a Chamber History Fact: In 1978 the Chamber supported moving the Brigham Young monument out of the middle of the Main and South Temple intersection. Opposition prevented its move until 1993.

You may have noticed a lot of things turning 100 this year such as the Temple Square Visitor’s Center and the Utah State Fairpark. It’s also the Salt Lake Chamber’s 100th Anniversary and on September 14th we are coming together for a Century Celebration Gala at the Little America. Stoel Rives and Questar sponsor the event. At the Gala we will honor over 100 of the people who gave extraordinary volunteer service to the Chamber. Call the Chamber now to reserve your space at 328-5050 or see us on the web at saltlakechamber.org.
