ELKO, Nev. (AP) — A federal official says crews are battling a wildfire that has quickly grown to more than 4.5 square miles after a lightning strike in remote northeast Nevada rangeland.

U.S. Bureau of Land Management spokesman Chris Hanefeld said Tuesday the fire that cast a red smoky pall over of Elko late Monday was less than a mile from the historic Pony Express trail, but wasn't threatening structures.

More than 50 firefighters were battling the fire.

Hanefeld says it was discovered Monday in pinion-juniper, sage and grass about 5 miles south of the Ruby Lake National Wildlife Refuge.

In western Nevada, fire officials are reporting full containment of a more than 2.5-square-mile fire that had threatened 50 homes during the weekend near Cold Springs. No structures burned and no injuries were reported.
