SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- A prosecutor stopped at a publicized police checkpoint has been cited for driving under the influence of alcohol.

Jon David Shuman, 43, who is with the Salt Lake County district attorney's office, was stopped about 1:30 a.m. Saturday during a court-approved administrative checkpoint by Salt Lake City police.

Police had published notices that all cars traveling on 300 West near 1100 South would be stopped.

Shuman was pulled over. His wife and one other passenger also were in the car, according to a police report obtained through a GRAMA request by the Deseret Morning News.

Officers detected a "strong odor of alcohol" from Shuman and noticed he had "glassy red eyes," the report said.

It said Shuman moved "really slow" while looking for his license and registration.

Police asked Shuman to perform field sobriety tests, and, "He replied, 'no,"' according to the report.

Other comments made by Shuman and his wife to police were taken out of the report released to the media.

While an officer was reading Shuman his rights, he began to dial his cell phone, according to the police report. When he refused an officer's command to stop, the cell phone was taken away from him and he was placed in handcuffs, the report said.

Shuman was given a citation, his license was taken away, his car was impounded and he was released at the scene to his friends.

The district attorney's office declined comment Monday.

There were 93 citations handed out during the checkpoint operation. Seven of those were for DUI. Two minors were issued citations for being in possession of alcohol.
