ST. GEORGE — A California woman and her 9-year-old son were ejected Monday during a crash in southern Utah.
Silva Garcia and her son, whose name was not immediately released, were passengers in a northbound GMC Yukon that overcorrected to the right on I-15 in St. George around 6:50 a.m.
Investigators believe Garcia's husband, Gonzalo Garcia, fell asleep and began drifting off I-15 to the left. When he woke up, he overcorrected to the right, causing the Yukon to roll at least twice, according to the Utah Highway Patrol. The vehicle landed upright in the right shoulder.
The Garcias and their three children were taken to Dixie Regional Medical Center. Their daughters, ages 10 and 7, were listed in good condition. Their 9-year-old son was taken by helicopter to University Medical Center in Las Vegas in critical condition. He was suffering from internal bleeding and was the "most seriously injured" member of the family, the UHP said.
Silva Garcia was taken to Dixie Regional Medical Center in St. George, also in critical condition, though the UHP later listed her condition as "stable but critical."
Information about Gonzalo Garcia's condition was not immediately available. The family is from Azua, California.
Police don't believe drugs, alcohol or excessive speed contributed to the crash.
"Driver fatigue is believed to be the cause of the crash," the UHP said in a statement.
Silva Garcia and her son were not wearing seat belts, according to the agency.
