CHICAGO (AP) — A new GenForward poll shows most young adults across racial and ethnic groups support tighter gun polices including background checks, stricter penalties for gun law violations, and banning semi-automatic weapons. About 9 in 10 young adults say they support criminal background checks for all gun sales, a level of support that remains consistent across racial and ethnic groups. Stiffer penalties also get 9 in 10 support.

LONDON (AP) — The suspect in a London stabbing rampage is due in court today. Nineteen-year-old Zakaria Bulhan of London has a hearing at Westminster Magistrates' Court in the killing of 64-year-old American Darlene Horton. Bulhan also faces five counts of attempted murder. Although London has been on edge because of attacks on the European mainland, police say they've found no evidence of links to terrorism.

PARIS (AP) — French investigators are trying to pin down the cause today of a fast-moving fire that swept through a birthday party in the basement of a bar in the northwest city of Rouen (roo-AHN'), killing at least 13 people and injuring six others. The local Paris-Normandie newspaper without citing sources, said a basement ceiling, which was covered in sound-insulating material, quickly ignited when candles were lit.

BEIRUT (AP) — Activists say a predominantly Kurdish force has wrested control of most of an Islamic State group stronghold away from the militants in northern Syria. The push took place under the cover of airstrikes by the U.S.-led coalition. Mustafa Bali, a Syria-based Kurdish activist, says IS still holds some areas but it's a matter of time before the town is captured.

RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) — Today it gets serious in Rio as dozens of athletic competitions take place in over 20 Olympic sports, ranging from archery to basketball, cycling, gymnastics, rowing, soccer, swimming and volleyball, among others. Twelve gold medals will be awarded. Yesterday, Brazil laced its high-energy opening party for the games of the 31st Olympiad with a sobering message of the dangers of global warming.
