PROVO — Lee Cummard left BYU as one of the more versatile players in the school’s basketball history.
The 2009 graduate from Mesa, Arizona, averaged 12.0 points, 5.2 rebounds, 2.8 assists and 53 percent shooting in his four-year career before a six-year career in Europe, most recently in Belgium.
Now he’s back in Provo as a member of head coach Dave Rose’s staff.
Cummard as accepted a position as a graduate assistant on the men’s basketball team for the 2016-17 season, Rose announced Friday when he finalized his 15-man roster.
“Lee is one of the greatest competitors to come through BYU,” Rose said in a statement. “We’re excited to help him start his coaching career. He has a lot to offer. Our players will benefit from his experience and knowledge of the game.”
The veteran BYU coach also announced the promotion of assistant coach Terry Nashif to assistant head coach. The former BYU guard has been on Rose’s staff since 2005, first as director of operations and later coordinating the offense since 2007.
“Terry has been valuable in so many positions for our program,” Rose said. “As a player, director of operations, assistant coach and now assistant head coach, Terry has proven to be loyal and capable of anything we ask of him. He does an excellent job of helping us score in so many ways. I’m excited to see what he will do with this current roster.”
In the announcement, Rose also unveiled his 15-player roster for the upcoming season, a list that includes just two seniors and two transfers in former Houston guard L.J. Rose and Elon scoring star Elijah Bryant.
The complete roster has been known for several days, since the addition of incoming freshman Colby Leifson from Suwanee, Georgia. But the announcement also makes official Jakob Hartsock’s departure from the program.
Below is the complete roster, as well as how it could potentially look in a five-man rotation set.
