RIO DE JANIERO (AP) — The most decorated athlete in Olympic history will lead the U.S. delegation into the Olympic stadium. Swimming star Michael Phelps, who has won 18 gold medals, has been selected in a vote by fellow members to carry the American flag in Friday's opening ceremony.
RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) — The Olympics in Brazil are underway — aptly with a game of soccer in the sport's spiritual home. Just not a very memorable one. Sweden's women beat South Africa 1-0 in a dull group-stage game in front of a sparse crowd of only a couple of thousand spectators in Rio de Janeiro.
RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) — The Canadian women's soccer team took only 20 seconds to make a mark on the Rio de Janeiro Games by scoring the fastest goal ever at the Olympics. Janine Beckie's goal in Canada's 2-0 victory over Australia was the fastest goal in Olympic history.
RIO DE JANIERO (AP) — The International Olympic Committee has unanimously approved the return of baseball and softball for the 2020 Tokyo Games. The IOC okayed a package of new sports that includes skateboarding, surfing, karate and sports climbing for the Tokyo Olympics only.
RIO DE JANIERO (AP) —Serena Williams is the top seed for single and with her sister, Venus, the No. 1 seed in doubles for the Olympic tennis competition at Rio. Serena is the defending singles champ and, with Venus, the doubles champ, too. Novak Djokovic (NOH'-vak JOH'-kuh-vich) is the top men's seed, followed by Andy Murray and Rafael Nadal (rah-fay-EHL' nah-DAHL').
