MORGAN — A fire ignited by farming equipment caused the closure of eastbound I-84 for about 45 minutes Friday afternoon.
The fire began around 3:20 p.m. at 510 W. Old Highway in the north end of Morgan city, said Morgan County Fire Department spokesman Dave Ricks. It started when a swather used to cut hay struck a rock, creating sparks, Ricks said.
The eastbound side of the nearby freeway was temporarily closed because of low visibility due to smoke. The fire burned about 50 acres of a field before being brought under control, according to Ricks.
Between about $25,000 and $30,000 worth of grain on state-owned land was burned. Nobody was hurt, and no equipment was damaged, Ricks said.
