This is Fred Ball for Zions Bank, speaking on business.
One of the newest “old” attractions in Utah’s Dixie area recently celebrated its grand opening. Seventy years ago the Beaver Dam Lodge was originally opened. Not only was it an oasis, halfway between Salt Lake and Los Angeles, it was a favorite “hide-a-way” for many of the famous Hollywood actors of that era. Jane Russell and Clark Gable were photographed together there in front of the large fireplace in the dining room. Back then, fishing was the sport that most guests enjoyed along with desert hiking and of course swimming.
The Beaver Dam Lodge is now “Hamilton Ranch Golf Resort and Inn” and boasts an 18-hole golf course, a completely rebuilt dining room and an 18-room inn, complete with conference facilities. It is probably the only golf course in the area that allows you to play 50 percent of the time in the shade because of the numerous large, old cottonwood trees. The course is interesting with some “tricky” and challenging holes that are fun to play.
The Cottonwood Dining Room has retained the romantic atmosphere of past years and the food is delicious. A new lobby area has been added to the inn, allowing guests to gather, visit or just relax. Each room has been tastefully decorated to a theme of old movies and movie stars. Each room has a large TV complete with VCR and, of course, is wired for personal computers. The conference room is equipped with a large conference table and executive chairs and is set up with a variety of audio/visual equipment.
Hamilton Ranch Golf Resort and Inn was purchased three years ago by George Hamilton and Don Wheeler. Don and George have had a long business relationship, dating back to their many years at Wheeler Machinery Co., the Caterpillar dealership for Utah. Upon retiring from Wheeler, they were looking for a new challenge. And developing the present resort facilities has been just that. But they’ve enjoyed it. Both Don and George are pleased with the finished product.
The resort is located 25 miles south of St. George on Interstate 15 in Beaver Dam, Ariz.
So the next time you’re headed south for golf, check out Hamilton Ranch Golf Resort and Inn, and discover why Hollywood legends considered it a treasured oasis in the desert.
