AYRSHIRE, Scotland — For the first time since 2007, a Utah golfer enters the final round of the British Open in the top 10.
Lehi’s Tony Finau carded a 1-over-par 72 during Saturday’s third round to sit tied for sixth place heading into Sunday’s final round at Royal Troon Golf Course in Scotland.
The West High graduate carded an up-and-down front nine, including a double bogey on the par-4, 401-yard seventh hole, for three-round score of 3-under 210.
Finau is tied with Steve Stricker and Soren Kjeldsen. The Puerto Rico Open champion is trying to claim the first top-10 finish at the Open since Mike Weir finished tied for seventh in 2007. Former BYU standout Johnny Miller won the Open championship in 1976.
Farmington native Danny Summerhays shot 77 Saturday to enter Sunday’s final round at 8-over 221 and tied for 73rd.
But leader Henrik Stenson and PGA star Phil Mickelson were quickly pulling away and setting up a Sunday showdown at Royal Troon. Stenson shot 68, including birdies on three of the first four holes Saturday, to take a one-stroke lead over Mickelson. The lefty, who lives in Arizona, cooled off after his historic opening-round 63 to card a 1-under 70 Saturday, but he still finished five strokes ahead of distant third-place Bill Haas.
The duo will tee off in the final group at 2:35 p.m. local time. Finau is scheduled to play the final round with Kjeldsen at 2:05 p.m. local time, while Summerhays will tee off at 8:10 a.m.
