LAYTON — Lieutenant Travis Lyman with the Layton Police Department is still trying to wrap his head around what an alleged thief did to two little girls.
On Tuesday at around 2:00 p.m. a man stole a little girl's purse from a Layton Walmart, according to police.
"You know the saying taking candy from a baby? It's pretty much what happened in this case," Lyman said. "It's pretty astonishing that somebody would steal something, you know, that clearly belongs to a child like that."
Surveillance video from the McDonald's inside the Wal-Mart shows the moment the alleged thief sees two unattended purses in a shopping cart.
"He does a double take, basically walks over nearby and looks around to make sure nobody is watching and you actually see him commit the theft," Lyman said.
Police said the man snatched a purse belonging to sisters ages six and seven years old. He also helped himself to cash in a purse belonging to one of the girls.
Altogether the man made off with $11.45.
The purses were left near the McDonald's counter, unattended while the two ate lunch with their father and grandmother.
"They were obviously pretty disappointed and didn't understand how this could happen, why somebody would do that," Lyman said.
Police said the suspect is between 20 and 30 years old. He wore a baseball cap, blue tank top with skulls, khaki pants and had an orange drawstring backpack on.
