PRETORIA, South Africa (AP) — A judge in South Africa has sentenced Oscar Pistorius to six years in prison for murdering his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp, in 2013. Pistorius had faced a possible 15-year jail term. But the judge said substantial and compelling circumstances in the double-amputee Olympic runner's case merited a lesser sentence.
VATICAN CITY (AP) — The Vatican says Pope Francis has met the parents of a U.S. college student whose body was found in Rome's Tiber River this week. A statement from the Holy See says Francis expressed to the parents of Beau Solomon strong sentiments of "compassion and his closeness in prayer to the Lord for the young man who died so tragically."
WASHINGTON (AP) — Republicans aren't letting up on their criticism of Hillary Clinton following the FBI's recommendation that she shouldn't face criminal charges over her handling of classified emails. Instead, they're expanding their criticism to include the agency itself. House Speaker Paul Ryan is promising House hearings on the FBI investigation.
ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. (AP) — Hillary Clinton takes her campaign to Atlantic City, New Jersey. She will cast Republican Donald Trump's turbulent business record in the seaside town as a prime example of why he shouldn't become president. Clinton will campaign near the Trump Taj Mahal casino, which now belongs to Carl Icahn (EYE'-kahn) and is the scene of a labor strike.
WASHINGTON (AP) — A congressional commission says the Department of Veterans Affairs still has "profound deficiencies" in delivering health care to millions of veterans. The panel says in a report to be released today that the VA delivers high-quality health care but is inconsistent from one site to the next, and that problems with access remain.
