LUBBOCK, Texas (AP) — The provost of Texas Tech University is in line to become president of the school in Lubbock.

Lawrence Schovanec (SKOO'-vuh-nek) was named Thursday as sole finalist for the president's job. Regents held a special meeting to choose Schovanec, whose faces a 21-day waiting period before being formally appointed.

Schovanec is also a senior vice president at Texas Tech, where he's been a faculty member since 1982.

M. Duane Nellis in January stepped down as Texas Tech president, after serving since mid-2013. John Opperman has served as interim president.

Schovanec holds a bachelor's degree from Phillips University. He received his master's degree from Texas A&M University, then earned his doctorate in mathematics from Indiana University.

His research interests are in biomechanical and physiological control systems and solid mechanics.
