ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) — Authorities are still trying to pin down possible motives in the Florida nightclub shootings. FBI Director James Comey says there's nothing so far to indicate the attack was directed from outside the U.S. The bureau and the White House say 29-year-old Omar Mateen, an American born Muslim, appears to be a "homegrown extremist" who professed loyalty to disparate and opposing radical groups.
PARIS (AP) — France's president has declared attacks on two police officials an act of terrorism. Francois Hollande (frahn-SWAH' oh-LAWND') chaired an emergency security meeting today after the late-night attack and standoff, in which two police officials, a man and woman who lived together, were killed. The attacker, Larossi Abbala, who had a past terrorist conviction, was also killed.
BEIJING (AP) — Two days of talks on cybersecurity have begun in western Beijing between Chinese and American officials. Both sides say they're committed to bridging their differences and moving to implement recent agreements, amid complaints over China-based hacking operations that the U.S. says may have already cost U.S. companies tens of billions of dollars.
MADRID (AP) — The fate of key evidence in one of Spain's biggest doping scandals is on the line today. A court is set to announce a decision on whether hundreds of blood bags should be destroyed or handed over to authorities for investigation. The decision comes 10 years after some of the world's top cyclists were implicated.
LAS VEGAS (AP) — The first of the famously mob connected hotel-casinos on the Las Vegas strip is about to be reduced to rubble. The now-closed Rivera will disappear in a cinematic implosion, complete with fireworks. The Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority, which owns the property, is spending $42 million to level the 13-building campus. The entire demolition will take a couple of months, starting today. Three of the most famous movies ever filmed in Las Vegas used the Riviera as a backdrop, including the Rat Pack's original "Ocean's 11" in 1960.
