WEST VALLEY CITY — Police said they have a man in custody after a chain of incidents that included a 30-year-old man falling out of a moving truck at a high rate of speed and sustaining critical injuries, multiple attempted carjackings and an attempted home break-in.

The series of incidents began late Thursday afternoon near 6000 West as the westbound black pickup truck began forcing “a few cars” off the road and sideswiping another, Utah Highway Patrol Sgt. Todd Royce said.

Royce said the driver also ran a red light at some point between 6000 West and 8000 West before a 30-year-old man inside either jumped out or was pushed out of the truck "at a high rate of speed."

The man that fell from the truck was taken to a hospital in critical condition, Royce said.

Not long after, UHP was alerted by Unified police of another crash involving the driver of the truck near 7200 W. 2800 South. Royce said the man fled the scene on foot and then attempted to carjack "multiple people" and also attempt to enter a home.

UPD eventually located the suspect around 3100 South before police used a Taser twice to apprehend the man, Royce said.

Royce said investigators suspect the driver was under the influence of drugs, but the case is still being investigated by UHP with UPD assisting.

The name of the suspect and the 30-year-old man injured were not immediately released.
