NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Dr. Lisa Mims-Devezin has been appointed the interim chancellor of Southern University at New Orleans, effective July 1.

The university, in a news release Tuesday, said Mims-Devezin will fill the position being vacated by Chancellor Victor Ukpolo (U-poh-loh), who is stepping down June 30.

Mims-Devezin currently serves as dean of the College of Arts & Sciences. Southern University System President-Chancellor Ray L. Belton appointed her to the post and the Board of Supervisors approved the appointment Friday.

Belton says she has served SUNO in various positions for more than 20 years. He says he's confident she can carry out the responsibilities of this interim appointment.

Mims-Devezin says she's committed to upholding the university "as an exceptional institution of higher learning."
