OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — Two storm systems continue to make their way across the nation's midsection and it doesn't bode well for the Ohio and Tennessee Valleys and parts of Texas. The Storm Prediction Center says central and northern Texas — including the Dallas-Fort Worth area — could see large hail and powerful winds today. In the east, Kentucky, southern Ohio, southern Illinois and southern Indiana are all at risk for tornadoes. So far, the risk is lower than yesterday when two people died in Oklahoma.
FORT MCMURRAY, Alberta (AP) — A more optimistic picture has emerged of Canada's oil sands town of Fort McMurray in Alberta now that it's no longer threatened by a still-growing wildfire. But at least two neighborhoods are scenes of utter devastation. Alberta Premier Rachel Notley says about 2,400 homes and buildings were destroyed, but firefighters managed to save 25,000 others. Plans are being made to allow tens of thousands of evacuees to return.
WASHINGTON (AP) — Hillary Clinton is rolling out proposals to curb the cost of child care for working parents. Clinton's campaign says she plans to discuss her child care proposals during a stop at a family health center in Louisville, Kentucky, today. She aims to ensure no family pays more than 10 percent of its income on child care through a mix of federal subsidies and tax relief. She's also proposing more spending to boost wages for child care workers and expand home visits by social workers or nurses for new parents.
CENTENNIAL, Colo. (AP) — The owners of the Colorado theater where 12 people died in James Holmes' shooting rampage will be defending themselves in court today. Twenty-eight victims and their families are suing. They say Cinemark should have had silent alarms and armed guards at the packed midnight premiere of a Batman film, where James Holmes launched his attack. Opening statements are scheduled.
BAGHDAD (AP) — Iraqi officials say at least 13 civilians died in a suicide bombing yesterday evening in a commercial area northeast of Baghdad. A police officer says the bomber blew up a minibus near a bakery and a falafel restaurant in a Shiite neighborhood of the city of Baqouba (bah-KOO'-bah), the provincial capital of Diyala province. The explosion also wounded at least 60 others.
