WASHINGTON (AP) — The Obama administration says the death of a third U.S. service member since the military stepped-up its fight against the Islamic state group in Iraq is not a sign that U.S. troops are becoming actively involved in the fight. The Pentagon has slowly expanded the American military role in fighting the group since the summer of 2014. It strategy aims to ensure that the Iraqis do the ground combat, supported by U.S. airpower and special operations advisers. A Navy SEAL died today while advising Kurdish forces.
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — It's been a day of name calling between Republicans Ted Cruz and Donald Trump. Indiana is holding a critical primary today, and one Cruz aide says the campaign is preparing for "a very somber" address from the Texas senator. Polls show him behind in the state he's called a must-win in terms of stopping Trump. Earlier today Cruz called Trump a "pathological liar" and "serial philanderer." Trump, for his part, rehashed unsubstantiated claims that the Texan's father had links to John F. Kennedy's killer.
NEW YORK (AP) — Stocks are closing lower on Wall Street, erasing a big gain from the day before. Energy companies and banks had some of the biggest losses. JPMorgan Chase and Chevron each sank 2 percent. The Dow fell 140 points. The S&P lost 18 points. The Nasdaq fell 54 points.
WASHINGTON (AP) — Federal investigators say a fire that caused a Washington subway train to fill with smoke inside a downtown tunnel last year can be traced to poor maintenance and ineffective inspection practices. The National Transportation Safety Board says the Metro transit authority failed to properly install and maintain third-rail power cables, causing them to become damaged by water and other contaminants. One person was killed and dozens were sickened.
NEW YORK (AP) — Target is facing increasing criticism for its transgender bathroom and dressing room policy. The retailer recently said customers and employees could use the restroom or fitting room that "corresponds to their gender identity" in response to a national debate over the issue. One online petition started by a conservative group called The American Family Association calls for a boycott of Target stores. The group says more than 1.1 million people signed up.
