SOUTH SALT LAKE — A motorcyclist died Thursday from injuries he suffered in a crash with an impaired driver earlier this week, police said.

Sigfried Meyer, 69, died early Thursday afternoon, two days after being transported to Intermountain Medical Center in Murray after a South Salt Lake crash.

Daniel Levert, 21, of Salt Lake City, was driving a sedan when he turned left in front of Meyer's Harley-Davidson motorcycle at the intersection of 2100 South and 600 West around 12:30 p.m. Tuesday, according to the Utah Highway Patrol.

Levert was booked into the Salt Lake County Jail on Tuesday for investigation of DUI causing serious bodily injury, possession of a controlled substance and evidence tampering. The Utah Highway Patrol said in a statement Thursday that the agency "will be working with the Salt Lake (County) District Attorney's Office to amend the charges" in light of Meyer's death.

Levert, who investigators say was turning left to go north and struck the westbound motorcycle, "immediately exited the vehicle and began trying to destroy marijuana and paraphernalia" after the crash, the Utah Highway Patrol said.

Investigators said Meyer, also of Salt Lake City, was not wearing a helmet and suffered significant head injuries when he was thrown from his motorcycle.

No formal charges from the incident had been filed against Levert as of Thursday.
